Regulation of Paramedics Under National Scheme Effective 1st December 2018

The ambulance and paramedic services industry provides critical emergency and health services predominantly in the pre-hospital and out-of-hospital environment. It plays a crucial role in society, and there have been some changes with National Law being introduced to ensure the safety of consumers of health services enabling the continuous development of a flexible, responsive and sustainable Australian health workforce.

The National Scheme

Effective 1st December 2018, paramedics are now required to be nationally registered for the first time in Australia.

From the day regulation of paramedicine takes effect,¬†only people who are registered with the Board will be able to lawfully call themselves a ‚Äėparamedic‚Äô or hold themselves out to be a ‚Äėparamedic'. Professional Indemnity Insurance Requirements for Paramedics

All paramedics must have professional indemnity insurance arrangements that meet the requirements of the standards for all aspects of their practice of the profession. You can be covered by your own insurance arrangements or third-party insurance arrangements such as through an employer, a volunteer organisation or a combination of both.
